flash1309102760Dharamshala: His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Sunday (September 12) inaugurated the Dorzong Monastic Institute - a Buddhist learning centre situated near Gopalpur, West Bengal, India.

Surrounded by scenic cedar forests, the institute plays an important role in the region by providing Buddhist teachings and a centre for the translation and publication of works on Tibetan Buddhism, ethics, arts and language. It also benefits students in Himalayan areas such as Zanskar, Lahaul and Kinnaur.

The ceremony was attended by over 100 followers, who heard speeches from Tibetan leaders including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, His Eminence Gyalwang Karmapa and Kalon Tripa (Prime Minister) Samdhong Rinpoche.

During his address, the Kalon Tripa noted the unique role the institute plays, saying it is "markedly different and noteworthy from other monasteries as it aims to provide opportunity to young Tibetans and people of Himalayan regions to study their traditional Buddhist religion".
