Dharamshala: The major US technology company Apple has removed all applications from its China-specific iTunes store that are even remotely related to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, IT websites reported.

At least five iPhone applications related to His Holiness the Dalai Lama are unavailable in Apple's China-based iTunes store.

Some of the applications removed from the iTunes store were Dalai Quotes, Dalai Lama Quotes and a Dalai Lama Prayerwheel that displayed inspirational quotes and teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

An application called Paging Dalai Lama, which showed the place where the His Holiness was currently teaching, as well as a Nobel Laureates application that gave information on Nobel Prize winners, including the Dalai Lama, have been removed.

The apparent censorship comes after carrier China Unicom launched iPhone sales two months ago, making a regulatory approval of the phone's contents in the country necessary for the first time, PC World and Macworld website reported.

The removal of the applications indicates the extent to which global companies are willing to modify their services in order to do business with China, stated ITProPortal.com, one of the UK's leading technology information resources.

Apple has now joined the ranks of Yahoo and Google, companies who have complied with the wishes of the Chinese Communist government regarding sensitive political issues, the website noted.
