This campaign increasingly targets the Tibetan language by removing it from public signage and forcing Tibetans to speak Mandarin. These restrictions have heavily impacted live streaming, a vital source of income for many Tibetans. Recently, authorities abruptly shut down the live stream of a Tibetan woman simply for singing a Tibetan song.

Dharamshala — Two Tibetan monks from the Nyarong Monastery in Nyarong County, eastern Tibet, jumped into a river to escape arrest by Chinese authorities. Chinese officials forbid young Tibetans from becoming monks and entering monasteries. If young men are caught residing inside a monastery, they face immediate arrest and imprisonment.

Dharamshala — A Tibetan monk has been bedridden for two years, unable to stand or speak, and is being fed through a feeding tube, after suffering torture and abuse at the hands of Chinese authorities while in Chinese detention. He had been arrested by the authorities for opposing China’s construction of the Kamtok (Gangtuo) hydroelectric dam, which threatened to destroy centuries-old monasteries in Gege County, Kham, in eastern Tibet.

Dharamshala — Chinese authorities expelled Tibetan monks and nuns from the Larung Gar, in Sertar County, eastern Tibet, following a large-scale operation to demolish their living quarters that began on July 13, 2026. Furthermore, the authorities are imposing severe restrictions on the freedom of movement of monks and nuns, as well as on pilgrims and tourists to visit to the monastery. The demolitions took place following the implementation of China’s new law, so-called the “Law on Ethnic Unity and Progress.”

Dharamshala — The Chinese authorities have demolished thousands of residences of Tibetan monks and nuns in Larung Gar, the world’s largest Tibetan Buddhist institute, since 2001. The latest wave of demolitions began in mid-July and is set to destroy 1,060 dwellings of monks and nuns. These demolitions took place following the implementation of China’s new law, so-called the “Law on Ethnic Unity and Progress,” which came into effect on July 1, 2026.
