Dharamshala: Tens of thousands of Tibetans and supporters from all over the world Sunday participated in rallies and prayer services to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the Tibetan people's national uprising against the Chinese invasion and occupation of Tibet.
With a demonstration of solidarity and a Tibetan Flag-Performance in front of the Chinese embassy in Berlin the Tibet Initiative Deutschland (TID) remembered the victims of the Tibetan Uprising in 1959. "All over the world the Tibetan Flag stands as a symbol for the Tibetan right of self-determination" said TID-Executive Director Nadine Baumann. "In Tibet even owning the flag is prohibited and will be punished." Furthermore TID demanded, that the Chinese Government starts an immediate dialogue with the Tibetans.
Like in Berlin TID-Groups in more than 20 German cities organized demonstrations to highlight the situation of human rights in occupied Tibet. Furthermore 1236 German cities, municipalities and counties followed TID's appeal and raised the Tibetan Flag at town halls, public buildings and on their websites. Including the regional capitals Bremen, Hannover, Magdeburg, Potsdam Saarbrücken, Stuttgart and Wiesbaden.
In Brussels, over 4,600 Tibetans and friends of Tibet from more than 27 European countries gathered in Brussels to commemorate the 54th anniversary of Tibetan national uprising day on 10 March. The peace march was held from Gare du Nord to Les Mont des Arts, Brussels city Center. It was led by Kirti Rinpoche, Mr. Thomas Mann, MEP, Mr. Penpa Tsering, Tibetan parliament speaker, Kalon Dicki Chhoyang, Mr. Kelsang Gyaltsen, Special Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Europe and Mr. Ngodup Dorjee, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama for Western Europe, Ven. Thupten Wangchen and Ms. Chungdak Koren, both Tibetan MPs from Europe.
Thousands of Tibetans and Taiwanese supporters were gathered in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan to commemorate the 54th anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan National Uprising. The event speakers, including Mr Tsering Dhondup, minister of Tibetan finance department and representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Taiwan, Mr Dawa Tsering, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Su Tseng-chang, former DPP chairperson Tsai Ing-wen and Taipei City councilors Chien Yu-yen.
In New York, thousands of Tibetans and supporters led by the representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama Mr Lobsang Nyandak gathered in front of the UN Headquarters. The Kashag's statement was read out Mr Nyangdak at the crowd gathering. He said the international community must support the determination and legitimate aspirations of the Tibetan people.
Hundreds of Tibetans and their French supporters together marked the 54th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day in Paris, the capital of France. The event, which was organised by the Students for a Free Tibet, France, saw representatives from Chinese, Japanese and Taiwanese communities taking part in the protest rally to support the Tibetan cause.
A commemoration ceremony was held at the Place de Trocadero, where homage was paid to all those Tibetans who have sacrificed their lives for Tibet, including the 107 self-immolators. Mr Tsering Dhondup, Secretary Bureau du Tibet, Paris read out the statement of Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay. Its French translation was read by a Tibetan youth.
Mr Jean Patrcik Gilles, a member of the French National Assembly and a co-president of the Tibetan Group in the assembly, addressed the crowd gathering. He said his Tibet Group would be meeting the French President Mr. Francois Hollande before the President's scheduled visit to China to urge him to press on the Chinese leadership to enter into constructive dialogue with the Tibetan leadership.
In the capital of Russia, Moscow, the commemoration of the national event began with prayer service, chanting "the Prayer of Truth", composed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama on 29th September 1960, and paying the homage to all those Tibetans who have sacrificed their lives for Tibet. Mrs Nadya Berkengeym, Vice-President of Moscow-based Tibet House and Mr Nawang Rabgyal, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Russia and Commonwealth of Independent States addressed the gathering.
Tibetans and supporters observed the 10th March anniversary in Kalmyk, Tuva and Buryat Republics. The Chairwoman of Friends of Tibet Society (FTS) in Kalmyk , Mrs. Antonina Kookueva read out the official statement of Kashag. Mrs. Ailana Balgan, President of Friends of Tibet Society in Tuva, spoke on the prevailing situation in Tibet and read the official statement of Dr Lobsang Sangay, the elected leader of Tibet. The anniversary also held in Buryat Republic, where there are Tibetans and Buddhist centers offered prayer services for those Tibetans who died in self-immolation protest.
Tibetans and supporters led Mr Pema Chhinjor, Kalon for department of religion and Culture participated the commemoration of 54th Tibetan National Uprising Day in Australia on 10 March. Pema Chhinjor said Tibetans living in the free world and Tibet supporters must redouble their efforts to let the world aware of the cries of Tibetans inside Tibet.
Members of the Chinese-Tibetan Friendship Association, Tibet Support Groups, Vietnamese and Nagaland communities joined hundreds of Tibetans to mark the epochal moment in Melbourne. In his address, Mr Tsering Samdup, president of the local Tibetan association, urged the international community, including the UN and peace loving people, to stand up for the Tibetan self-immolators' genuine aspirations for freedom and His Holiness the Dalai Lama's return to Tibet.
The Office of Tibet in South Africa organised a photo exhibition on Tibet at the Littleton Community Library on 9 March to commemorate the 54th National Uprising Day. His Holiness the Dalai Lama's Representative Migyur Dorjee gave a talk on the significance of the day and on the primary causes of the wave of self-immolations in Tibet. Sikyong's statement was handed over to every member present on the occasion.
Mrs Heldigard, a practicing Buddhist lady, who assisted us organising the exhibition, went along with Tenzin Kunsang of the Office of Tibet to some other libraries in Pretoria on that day and displayed leaflets on Tibet. On 10 March, a special prayer service for all those Tibetans who have sacrificed their lives for Tibet at Lamrim Buddhist Centre in Johannesburg.
One hundred and seven Tibetan activists participated in two flash mob campaigns organised by the Tibetan Youth Congress on the anniversary of 54th Tibetan National Uprising of 1959. The 107 activists all wore T-shirts adorned with the images of self-immolators caught the Indian shoppers unawares in New Delhi, the capital of India Falling down on the pavement to the tune of "We shall overcome" sung in Hindi, English and Tibetan, some participants chalked the outline of the lying students while others distributed pamphlets and press releases.
The commemoration of the 54th Anniversary of the Tibetan Peoples National Uprising Day also held in the streets of Sydney, Tokyo, London, Vienna, Washington, Hong Kong, Toronto and other major cities around the world.
