Dharamshala, India — 'The abduction and disappearance of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima is a denial and a violation of basic human rights. I urge the United Nations, human rights rapporteurs, and journalists to go to Tibet and ask the Chinese government for his immediate release,' said the President of CTA on his 32nd birthday.

In 1995, the six-year-old boy vanished after His Holiness the Dalai Lama recognised him as the reincarnation of the 10th Panchen Lama, Tibetan Buddhism's second most senior figure. Since then, no one knows where he is being kept or where he is currently residing. Despite the demands of the United Nations, the European Union, and human rights organisations for the release of the 11th Panchen Lama, the Chinese government has refused to reveal his whereabouts.

“The abduction and disappearance of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima is a denial and a violation of basic human rights. I demand and urge the United Nations, human rights rapporteurs, and journalists all over the world to write about him; go to Tibet and ask the Chinese government for his immediate release so that he could enjoy basic human rights like any other human being,” stated Dr Lobsang Sangay, the President of Central Tibetan Administration.

“Till then, Tibetans all over the world particularly inside Tibet will be with the 11th Panchen Lama. We will work in solidarity till he is released, till he could practice his spiritual duties, till he could be the leader that he should be,” the president concluded.
