Dharamshala — His Holiness the Dalai Lama expressed his condolences on the passing away of Manmohan Singh, the 13th Prime Minister of India on December 26, 2024. His Holiness wrote, 'I will remember him in my prayers and offer my condolences his family at this sad time. I felt he was like an elder brother to me and he lived a truly meaningful life.'
Dharamshala — The Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile strongly condemns China's sanctions against the Canada Tibet Committee, the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project and 20 human rights defenders in Canada. The Tibetan Parliament also calls on China to immediately cease all forms of transnational repression aimed at intimidating and silencing those who courageously defend human rights at home and abroad.
Dharamshala — MP Tapir Gao from Arunachal Pradesh, urged the Indian government to officially recognise the institution of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and to honour His Holiness with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in recognition of his global contribution to peace, non-violence, and religious harmony.
Washington, DC — The bipartisan and bicameral Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) has released its 2024 annual report on the human rights situation in China, Tibet and East Turkestan. The report states that China continues to restrict Tibetans' freedom of religion, education and language, as well arrests and imprisons Tibetans who try to protect them. It also mentions the large-scale arrest of Tibetans in Dege after protesting against the construction of dam.
London — During a debate on the UK Government policy towards China, Lord Callanan of UK Parliament said, "the Chinese Communist Party’s decades-long campaign to erase Tibetan culture, religion and identity is a stain on the conscience of the international community. Let us not forget that, not that long ago, Tibet was an independent country."
New York — Tibetan Youth Congress's General Secretary Sonam Tsering met with Chinese Ambassador Geng Shuang, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the UN, quizzes him on the colonial-style boarding schools in Tibet and policies aimed at erasing Tibetan identity and culture. Also asked why China was reluctant to enter into dialogue with His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, he replied: “The door is always open”.
Brussels — To mark International Human Rights Day, the EU has issued a statement explaining its review of visits to China and Tibet in June 2024. It expresses serious concerns remain about civil, cultural, economic, social and political rights in Tibet and other regions. They urge China to respect, protect and fulfil human rights for all.
