New Delhi — His Holiness the Dalai Lama had a successful left knee replacement surgery in the morning of Monday, according to the his personal physicians. They said that His Holiness the Dalai Lama's condition is stable, following his successful left knee replacement surgery at Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, on June 8, 2026.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s personal physicians—Dr Tsetan Dorji Sadutshang, Dr Tamdin Tsewang, Dr Tsering Lhadon, and Dr Tenzin Tsundue—together with Mr Tenzin N. Taklha, Secretary to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, provided a brief update on His Holiness’s condition following his successful left knee replacement surgery earlier today at Apollo Hospital, New Delhi,on June 8, 2026.
Dr Tsetan Dorji Sadutshang said, “Today, His Holiness had a very successful left knee replacement surgery and his right knee replacement surgery done in New York, in June, 2024. Following today’s procedure, His Holiness returned to his hospital room in stable condition. His recovery is progressing well, and he remains in good spirits."
“The medical, nursing, and administrative teams at Apollo Hospital have been providing exceptional care, support, and attention. We are deeply grateful for their professionalism, dedication, and kindness,” they concluded.
In June 2024, His Holiness the Dalai Lama underwent a successful right knee replacement surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and made an excellent recovery.
Monks, nuns, and Tibetans from the Dharamsala area organising a prayer service and performing a series of rituals at the main Tibetan temple (Tsuklahkhang) in Dharamsala on June 8 and 9, 2026, including chanting the Tara mantra one million times and reciting the Medicine Buddha Sutra, to pray for the success of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s left knee replacement surgery and speedy recovery from it.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama left Dharamsala for New Delhi on June 4, 2026, on a charter flight. Hundreds of people, including Tibetans and local Indians, gathered along the streets and roads to bid farewell to His Holiness and pray for his safe journey and a speedy recovery from his left knee treament. Once recovered, His Holiness will travel to Ladakh at the end of June, 2026 for an extended stay.
