Dharamshala — His Holiness the Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibet, wrote to Ms. Tsai Ing-wen, President of Taiwan, the Republic of China, to express his sadness to learn of the loss of life and extensive devastation of property and infrastructure that has taken place during a powerful earthquake off the east coast of Taiwan.

Washington, D.C.— U.S. Representatives James P. McGovern and Young Kim unveiled a novel Congressional resolution on March 11, 2024, championing the protracted plight of the people of Tibet, whose fundamental human rights face incessant jeopardy at the hands of the government of China. The resolution commemorates the 65th anniversary of Uprising Day of Tibet, observed on March 10, 1959, and denounces the egregious human rights violations entwined with a pernicious hydroelectric dam initiative in Dege County, eastern Tibet.

On March 10th, Tibetans residing in the nearby suburbs of New South Wales, predominantly in Sydney, marked the 65th anniversary of the National Uprising Day against the Chinese occupation of Tibet and the ongoing cultural genocide within the region, with particular concerns for the recent wave of mass arrests in Dege County.

Amidst escalating tensions in Dege County of eastern Tibet and strong emotions of solidarity among overseas Tibetans with their fellow Tibetans in the county, approximately a hundred Tibetan demonstrators surged into the Chinese consulate in Sydney, Australia's second-largest city, on March 6, 2024.

Brussels – The 9th International Conference of Tibet Support Groups, held recently in Brussels, Belgium, and they called on Chinese government to release more than 1,000 Tibetans detained in Dege County, eastern Tibet, for peacefully protesting against the construction of a mega-dam in their region and the forced relocation of villages and monasteries. Tibet support groups also called for an end to all forced relocations of rural Tibetans and centuries-old Tibetan monasteries.

Washingtong – Representative James P. McGovern (MA-02), Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee and Co-Chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, and Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, introduced the Human Rights Defenders Protection Act of 2024—cosponsored in the U.S. House by Representatives Jamie Raskin (MD-08), Norma Torres (CA-35), Ilhan Omar (MN-05), and Jason Crow (CO-06). The legislation strongly reaffirms U.S. commitment to human rights defenders and enhances the government’s ability to protect advocates abroad who are threatened or attacked for peacefully defending human rights and democracy.
