Dharamshala — The Chinese government has deployed a large number of armed forces in Tibet, marching in the streets with weapons, controlling Tibetans and raiding their homes to see if they are celebrating the 90th birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama or protesting against the Communist Party of China (CPC) and demanding the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
The Chinese government has deployed the Chinese army, armed police and special forces omnipresent in the Tibetan regions of Amdo, Kham and Utsang, particularly in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, from June to July 2025, as Tibetans and people around the world celebrate the 90th anniversary of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration, the Tibetan government-in-exile will celebrate the Year of Compassion throughout the year, from 6 July 2025 to 6 July 2025, to celebrate the profound contributions of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the promotion of peace, non-violence, compassion, love, inter-religious dialogue, the preservation of Buddhism and culture, language and universal responsibility.
But in Tibet, the Chinese government has not allowed them to celebrate the 90th birthday of their spiritual leader, who is dearer to them than their lives, and many of whom have already sacrificed their lives to demand the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet, such as those who self immolated to protest against the totalitarian CCP regime in Tibet, demanding freedom for Tibetans and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet.
Every year, particularly in the run-up to, during and just after the birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, who was forced into exile more than six decades ago, the Chinese government tightens restrictions on Tibetans and warns them not to do anything related to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This year, particularly on the occasion of His Holiness' 90th birthday celebrations, the Chinese government has deployed the ubiquitous Chinese army, police and special forces in the Tibetan regions of Amdo, Kham and Utsang, with a particular focus on Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, from June to July, 2025.
A reliable source told TPI that one day before the 90th birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, according to the Tibetan calendar, on June 30, 2025, the Chinese authorities raided houses in the Regong region of eastern Tibet to check whether they kept the portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and other objects related to him.
"Since June, the Chinese authorities stepped up the deployment of the Chinese army, armed police, special forces, Ganzi Special Forces and Lhasa Special Forces in regions of Amdo, Kham and Utsang in Tibet, particularly in Lhasa, marching in the streets and lining up near the gates of monasteries to check whether Tibetans are secretly celebrating the 90th birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama," the source said.
The source said that the Chinese authorities in Regong county, in north-eastern Tibet, have deployed a large number of armed forces and prevented Tibetans from celebrating a traditional festival called ‘Lurol’, which consists of offering milk, curd, incense and dancing while wearing traditional Tibetan clothing to the gods and deities to obtain their protection. This festival takes place in June for 10 days, even though it is a simple festival, but the Chinese authorities have prevented it because they fear that when Tibetans gather they are celebrating the 90th birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama or protesting against the Chinese government.
“In addition, the Chinese authorities in the region have ordered Tibetans not to celebrate summer festivals, which generally take place between June and July, when family and friends gather to enjoy delicious food and dance or sing together. The Chinese authorities do not allow wedding ceremonies during these months either,” the source said.
“The Chinese armed forces and police have also marched into villages and towns and stepped up the crackdown, warning Tibetans not to do anything related to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, including celebrating his 90th birthday. The authorities have also ordered Tibetans to shut down shops, bars and restaurants after 6pm,” the source concluded.
