Bangalore: In a show of gratitude to the government and people of India, Tibetans in exile will exhibit Tibet's cultural heritage in a three-day festival in the south Indian city of Bangalore from 22-24 November. The celebration will bring some of the most important Tibetan exile institutions together to showcase the Tibetan refugees' accomplishments in community building, education and cultural preservation.
Mr. Narendra Babu, Member of Karnataka's State Legislative Assembly, will inaugurate the festival on 22 November at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath.The event will include a film festival during which classic Hollywood films on Tibet like "Kundun" and other documentary films such as "Tibet: Cry of the Snowlion", "Tibet: Murder in Snow", and "The Unwinking Gaze" will be screened.
Scholars, including expert Claude Arpi, will take part in a panel discussion entitled "India-Tibet Relations: Past and Present". Geshe Lhakdor is scheduled to speak about "Buddhism in the 21st Century", and other noted writers and researchers will lecture on Tibetan Buddhism, medicine and Tibet's environment. Traditional Tibetan doctors from the Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute will provide free patient consultations, and TMAI's senior consulting physician Dr. Dorjee Rabten Neshar, also chairman of the Central Council of Tibetan Medicine, will talk about the unique features of Tibetan medicine, and its contribution to the holistic health and harmony of modern society.
In terms of cultural performances, the children of the TCV School at the Bylakuppe Tibetan settlement will present a series of traditional dances and songs. Namdroling Payul Monastery and Palden Tashi Drepung Gomang Monastery will perform the Tibetan Buddhist mask dance (Cham) and traditional Buddhist chanting.
A photo exhibit by the Tibet Museum, titled "Tibet's Journey in Exile" will be on display.
There will also be an exhibition on carpet weaving and Thangka painting by the Tibetan Dickey Larso Cooperative Society Ltd. Other items on display include organic produce from the Tibetan settlements and a unique sand mandala by the Gyudmed Tantric University.
The Department of Information and International Relations will organize the event, in coordination with the Bangalore-based Office of the Chief Representative of the Central Tibetan Administration.
Admission to visit the festival is free.
