Lausanne — To mark International Olympic Day on 23 June 2021, protests are planned in at least 50 locations around the world to boycott the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, calling on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to cancel the 2022 Winter Olympics in China.
From 4 to 20 February 2022, the 2022 Winter Olympics, also known as Beijing Olympics 2022, will be held in China, where one of the world's worst violations of human rights, freedom, and democracy has been taking place for decades.
To mark the occasion, activists from Taiwan, Tibet, East Turkestan, China, Hong Kong, and Southern Mongolia and their allies launched a global day of action on 23 June 2021 demanding "No Beijing 2022" and calling on the IOC to cancel the 2022 Winter Olympics in China and move them to another location to secure athletes' rights and freedoms. Thousands of people from at least 50 locations around the world took part in the global demonstrations.
The demands of the peaceful demonstrators are as follows:
- The International Olympic Committee should move the 2022 Winter Olympics to another location to secure the rights and freedoms of the athletes.
- The Legislative Yuan should pass the resolution to boycott the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and join the parliaments of the 11 countries who stand for the boycott. The Taiwanese government should also support the boycott.
- The Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee should stop the self-depreciation and rectify Taiwan Olympic Committee. If the Winter Olympics is still happening in Beijing, China, Taiwan should not send the delegation.
- Corporations should not sponsor the Beijing Winter Olympics. And global consumers should boycott the corporations supporting the dictatorship.
Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) atrocities and human rights violations include:
- At least TWO million Uyghur, Kazakh, and Uzbek Muslims are detained in “re-education camps” undergoing systematic torture, rape, and political re-education.
- Illegally occupied Tibet is listed as the worst place in the world for rights, alongside Syria.
- In Hong Kong, the Chinese government has implemented a draconian National Security Bill that effectively criminalises protests and curtails any remaining human rights.
- Protests by Southern Mongolians, whose rights, language, and culture being eradicated, are put down with force
- Detention & disappearance of countless Chinese lawyers, feminists & activists
- Intimidation and geopolitical bullying of Taiwan and aggression and expansion across borders – in the South China Sea and India-Tibet border – present a clear threat to regional and global security.
With these heinous crimes against humanity, China defies the core values of friendship, respect, peace, and equality in the Olympics and does not deserve the right to host such a prestigious event.
Thus a mass campaign and protest namely #NoBeijing2022 is being held around the globe as well as through social media, including Facebook lives and toolkits. The demand is to get the International Olympic Community (IOC) to move the Winter Olympics 2022 to another location, but IOC has failed to comply with the demand despite having clear evidence of Human Rights violation and political bullying by CCP. Thus, the protestors now call for the sponsors and Governments to say #NoBeijing2022.
