Dharamshala — His Holiness the Dalai Lama wrote to His Excellency the Prime Minister of Morocco on Monday to offer his condolences following the devastating earthquake that has claimed many lives and left many injured. He also made a donation for rescue and relief operations in the areas affected by the earthquake.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibet, wrote to the Prime Minister of Morocco, Aziz Akhannouch, on September 11 2023, after learning the sad news of the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco, costing many lives and destroying much property.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama wrote, "I offer my condolences to Your Excellency, the families of those who have lost loved ones and pray for all those affected by this great tragedy."

"I am aware that your government is doing everything it can to provide support to help the rescue and relief efforts in the quake zones. It is also heartening that the international community is sending aid following the earthquake," His Holiness added.

The spiritual leader of Tibet wrote, "As a token of my solidarity with the people of Morocco affected by this tragedy, I have asked the Gaden Phodrang Foundation of the Dalai Lama to make a donation towards the rescue and relief efforts."

His Holiness the Dalai Lama concluded his message with prayers.

More than 2,000 people died and hundreds more were injured in the earthquake that shook Morocco on the night of September 8, 2023. It was the worst earthquake to hit the country for 120 years. International organisations, including the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, are present in the areas affected by the earthquake to provide first aid, participate in search and rescue operations and help local authorities assess aid needs.
