New York — Tibetan activists from the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress (RYTC) in New York and New Jersey (USA) organised a protest against the Chinese Communist Party to denounce its oppressive policies towards Tibetans in Tibet. These policies led to massive protests in Tibet in 1987,and the acitivists shouting: "Never forget the Tibetan uprising in 1987".

Tibetans and Tibetan activists in New York held a demonstration on September 27, 2023 against the Chinese Communist government for the illegal occupation of Tibet and the violation of basic human rights in Tibet, at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, New York, to commemorate 36th the anniversary of the peaceful Tibetan uprising that took place in Lhasa on September 27, 1987 and to remember the Tibetans who sacrificed their lives for the Tibetan cause.

On September 27, 1987, numerous monks gathered at the main market in Lhasa from the Drepung Monastery to raise pro-independence slogans. The slogans included "Free Tibet", "Tibet belongs to Tibetans", "May His Holiness Dalai Lama Live Long", and "China out of Tibet". Many Tibetans more joined them and soon the event became the first political outburst of Tibetans since 1959, when thousands of Tibetans along with His Holiness Dalai Lama fled Tibet.

The 1987 demonstration was a response to Chinese criticism and rejection of the five-point peace plan proposed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama for a peaceful solution to the Sino-Tibetan conflict. The protests continued for almost two years in three regions of Tibet, despite brutal repression by the Chinese authorities, who opened fire on the demonstrators and killed many people (the figures are underestimated), including monks. The 1987 independence movement made a bold statement through these events, about the sentiments of Tibetans at the time and how critical the situation of Tibetans is in Chinese-occupied Tibet.

In accordance with the Dalai Lama's phrase "Despite difficulties and challenges, build your will and determination like a mountain", the RYTC has organised this event to keep alive its determination to free Tibet from Chinese colonisation.

Thupten Chonyi, an independent Tibetan activist who has been protesting against the Chinese government for nearly seven months at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, New York, and campaigning for a free and independent Tibet, has made a one-year commitment to Tibetan independence. He was joined by Tibetan activists from the RTYC, who demonstrated together to mark the 36th anniversary of the peaceful Tibetan uprising in Lhasa on September 27 1987.

During a peaceful protest at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, New York, on September 27, 2023, the protesters chanted: "Release all Tibetan political prisoners", "Shutdown Colonial Boarding Schools in Tibet", "Independence for Tibet","Free Tibet Now, China out Tibet now", "Tibet for Tibetans, Tibet is not part of China", "Shame on Chinese government, stop lying to the world, China lies, Tibet dies", "China, stop genocide in Tibet, stop killing in Tibet, stop torture in Tibet, "world people support Tibetans,"
