McGovern (MA-02), Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee and Co-Chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, and Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, introduced the Human Rights Defenders Protection Act of 2024—cosponsored in the U.S. House by Representatives Jamie Raskin (MD-08), Norma Torres (CA-35), Ilhan Omar (MN-05), and Jason Crow (CO-06). The legislation strongly reaffirms U.S. commitment to human rights defenders and enhances the government’s ability to protect advocates abroad who are threatened or attacked for peacefully defending human rights and democracy.

Geneva — During China's fourth universal periodic review at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday, 20 countries from around the world, including the USA, UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Australia, Canada and Japan, highlighted China's serious human rights violations in Tibet. They called on China to respect human rights of Tibetans and abolish the Chinese boarding schools in Tibet, as well as allow unhindered access to UN special rapporteurs and independent experts to evaluate the persistent reports of violations of human rights in Tibet.

Dharamshala – Uzra Zeya, US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, spoke at a side event on human rights in China and Tibet on the eve of the fourth Universal Periodic Review of the People's Republic of China. She said: "Over the past four years of this review period, the People's Republic of China has consistently responded to diversity and dissent with fear, intolerance and repression. Nowhere is this more obvious than in Tibet, what is happening in Tibet is not happening in a vacuum, but concerns us all.”

New Delhi — The 12th General Assembly of the Asian Buddhist Peace Conference (ABCP), held in New Delhi recently, and they unanimously declared that His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the "Universal Supreme Leader of the Buddhist World" in recognition of his lifelong contribution to bringing Buddhist communities closer and strengthening a sense of oneness of humanity. It also proclaimed the birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama as "Universal Day of Compassion", which celebrates on July 6.

Washington, D.C. – The US International Religious Freedom Award presented to seven individuals, in recognition of their courage and commitment to promoting and defending religious freedom around the world. One of them is Tibetan activist Lhadon Tethong of the Tibet Action Institute, for recognising the right to religious freedom of 6 million Tibetans who face extreme Chinese attacks on their religion, culture and identity.

Geneva — Ahead of China's Universal Periodic Review on January 23, 2024, Tibetan human rights advocates and activists from the Tibet Advocacy Coalition met with the governments of over 30 countries and informed them of the truth about the situation in Tibet, which includes Chinese boarding schools in Tibet, the denial of religious freedom for Tibetans, and Tibetan human rights defenders / justice and fair trials.

Bodhgaya – His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet congratulated Lai Ching-te on his election as President of Taiwan and wished him every success in meeting the challenges ahead and fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the Taiwanese people. His Holiness also wrote: "Indeed, observing the exercise of democracy, as has just taken place in Taiwan, is a source of encouragement for all those who aspire to live in freedom and dignity."
